Concert Season 2004-2005
Eastside Arts Alive!
Arts
Alive! will showcase over 20 organizations in a weekend of performances
and displays at Meydenbauer Center Theatre and Kirkland Performance
Center.
In its multifaceted sampler program, the Cascadian Chorale will sing
the beloved Lacrymosa from Mozart’s Requiem, folk song
settings by Cascadian Composer in Residence Bern Herbolsheimer, and
satirical love songs by Paul Sjolund. We conclude with a rousing musical
romp through the woods of Ormonde — Ravel’s musical nod to
Halloween.

Strands of Gold
Alison Austin, Harp; David Gorgas, Guitar; David Phillips, Piano;
Gunnar Folsom, Percussion
The
Cascadian Chorale presents a spirited concert of holiday music to soothe
the soul and lift the spirit. The strings of harp, guitar and piano —
our Strands of Gold — enrich the Chorale’s presentation of
seasonal works both secular and sacred. Featured works include the
festive Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten, luminous carol
settings by Stephen Paulus (frequent composer for the Dale Warland
Singers), and Conrad Susa's charming Carols and Lullabies: Christmas
in the Southwest.

Concert for Peace
Cascadian Chorale and Cascadian Singers (Philip Tschopp, Conductor /
Artistic Director)
Bainbridge Chorale and
Northwest Symphony
Orchestra (Anthony Spain, Conductor / Artistic Director)
Christina Villareale, Soprano
Craig Hart, Baritone
Anthony Spain and Philip Tschopp, Conducting
The
Cascadian Chorale returns to Benaroya Hall in a joint performance of
Vaughan Williams’s stirring Dona Nobis Pacem. Written in the dark
years before World War II, this passionate, deeply-felt cantata served
as the composer’s cry of warning that a disastrous war was at hand.
Further enriched by Cascadian Composer Bern Herbolsheimer’s vigorous
Te Deum — in the first Benaroya performance of a major work by this
acclaimed Northwest composer — and Brahms’s startling Schicksalslied
(“Song of Destiny”), the program promises to stir the heart and the
mind.

Homage
Kwonbin Park, Violin
Kevin Krentz, Cello
Martin Welzel, Organ
Modern composers pay tribute to great composers and styles of the past,
with madrigals and part-songs both sublime and whimsical. Come enjoy the
Cascadian Singers' interpretation of Morten Lauridsen's Madrigali
(delightful Italian "Fire Songs"), Bern Herbolsheimer's By the waters
of Babylon (a tribute to J.S. Bach), and Stephen Paulus's clever
MusiQuotes. You'll also experience the world premiere of David
White's Dover Beach (in homage to Benjamin Britten), a virtuoso
setting of Matthew Arnold's poignant anti-war poem, featuring violinist
Kwonbin Park and cellist Kevin Krentz. With these and other choral
delights, this will be a concert sure to lighten the soul!

Love Letters
Our
year comes to a rousing finish with an evening to celebrate the fickle
muse d’amour. Join us as we sing famous — and infamous — texts
capturing both the earnest and the whimsical nature of romance.
Highlighting the evening will be the world premiere of Bern
Herbolsheimer’s tongue-in-cheek Letters of Love paired with
Brahms’s fiery Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Songs). Additional
highlights include Eric Whitacre’s lush She Weeps Over Rahoon,
Paul Sjolund's satirical Love Lost, and a delightful set of
high-spirited madrigals to cap the evening! This festive potpourri of
infectious melodies will leave you humming as you go!
